Directions

From the M6 south:

  • Exit the M6 at Junction 36. Turn left onto the A590, heading towards Kendal, Barrow and Windermere for 3.3 miles.
  • Continue onto the A591 signposted Windermere/Kendal for a further 5.2 miles until you reach a large roundabout.
  • Go straight over the roundabout, continuing to follow signs for Windermere.
  • Continue on for 6.5 miles, passing Staveley and going through the village of Ings.
  • Turn left into Windermere on the A5074 into Main Road and follow signs for Bowness Bay and the Lake.
  • Drive down the hill for approximately 1.2 miles, leaving Windermere and then entering Bowness.
  • As you pass the cinema on the right start looking at the shops on the left.  Find Lakeland clothing shop and turn left immediately afterwards, up Helm Road.
  • If you reach the mini-roundabout you've gone too far.  Do a U-turn at the roundabout and go back up the hill, taking the first road on the right, Helm Road.
  • Head to the top of the hill.  Beechwood Close is the second road on the right and Oakdene is the first house on the right.

From the M6 north:

There are several route choices from the M6 north: the scenic route over Kirkstone Pass (do not attempt in poor weather). This takes approx 45 minutes.

  • Leave the M6 at J40 heading east. Take the 4th exit at the roundabout onto the A66 towards Keswick, Workington and Ullswater.
  • After 1 mile, take the second exit onto the A592.
  • Follow this road over the Kirstone Pass for 23 miles until you reach a roundabout. Go straight over, following signs for Bowness.
  • After 2 more miles you'll reach a mini-roundabout. Take the first exit, left, heading up the hill towards Windermere.
  • Take the first right, Helm Road, and head to the top of the hill.
  • Beechwood Close is the second road on the right and Oakdene is the first house on the right.

An alternative route from the M6 north takes the scenic A6 along the eastern perimeter of the National Park and takes approx 55 minutes.

  • Leave the M6 at J39 and turn right towards Shap/Kendal A6. Follow the road sharp left to stay on the A6 towards Kendal for 14 miles.
  • Follow the signs through Kendal, turning right towards Windermere on the A5284 (Windermere Road).
  • After 1 mile go straight over the large roundabout onto the B5284 heading towards Crook and Hawkshead (via ferry).
  • After 6.5 miles of narrow country lanes you'll reach a T-Junction. Turn right onto the A5074 sign posted Windermere.
  • After 1 mile, you'll reach another T-Junction in Bowness. Turn right and follow the road up to the mini- roundabout.
  • Take the second exit, heading up the hill towards Windermere.
  • Take the first right, Helm Road and head to the top of the hill.
  • Beechwood Close is the second road on the right and Oakdene is the first house on the right.

From Windermere:

  • Take the A5074, High Street, heading downhill and following signs for Bowness and the Lake.
  • Drive down the hill for approximately 1.2 miles, leaving Windermere and then entering Bowness.
  • As you pass the cinema on the right start looking at the shops on the left.  Find Lakeland clothing shop and turn left immediately afterwards, up Helm Road.
  • If you reach the mini-roundabout you've gone too far.  Do a U-turn at the roundabout and go back up the hill, taking the first road on the right, Helm Road.
  • Head to the top of the hill.  Beechwood Close is the second road on the right and Oakdene is the first house on the right.

From Keswick:

  • From Keswick take the A591 south towards Windermere.
  • Stay on this road for 21 miles, past Grasmere and through Ambleside.
  • At the small roundabout, turn right onto the A592 towards Bowness.
  • Follow the road for almost 2 miles until you reach a mini-roundabout.
  • Take the first exit, left, heading up the hill towards Windermere.
  • Take the first right, Helm Road, and head to the top of the hill.
  • Beechwood Close is the second road on the right and Oakdene is the first house on the right.

By train or bus:

  • Train to Windermere Station, then taxi or 597 bus (in peak times). Oakdene B&B is in Bowness on Windermere, approx 1.5 miles from the train station.
